I have wanted to walk the AT for many years.  Now is the time.  I currently am in training (if you want to call it that) by walking with my rucksack doing some push ups, crunches, hello dolly's and flutter kicks.  You old SF guys will remember those exercises.  I have a SPOT that I will get on line so you folks can keep up with us.  Please feel to comment  Stan and I appreciate the words of encouragement we have received.  Please follow us through this little trek.  We plan to start at Rockfish Gap and head north spending 3 days and 2 nights in Shenandoah National Park.  We will terminate the first section of the hike at Pinefield Gap.

  1. I started training for this short trek on 14 May 2015. I try to get in at least 4 miles per day but have taken some longer walks so far I am at the 98.25 mile mark. I started with 30 pounds in my Osprey (Kestrel 58 liter) ruck increasing the weight to 41 pounds. I have been playing with various configurations of load balancing and think I have it about wired. I have been able to reduce some of the weight by substituting a gas stove with an alcohol stove, long pants with a pair of shorts, wool socks with nylon etc.
Initially the hard part was making myself get off the couch and start. After the first step it was just heal to toe, find a point up trail and get there then pick another point. I live in some fairly hilly country so up and down training is here. Unfortunately we are only 3 feet MSL so I will face the challenge of altitude when we get to Rockfish Gap to start the walk. No problem..look up trail ... pick a point.... walk to it....

I will post pictures of the gear I am taking along with a Class I layout (for you non Army folks Class I is food). I am playing with my dehydrator and vacuum sealer and will be making up my own meals. So far I have a spaghetti dinner, chili, chicken and beef veggie soup, and a Brunswick stew ready to go. Will also dry some apples and homemade granola. So goes prep.

Will take a long walk today and tomorrow.

Get off the couch... do something!
